Pebble Beach, California, USA
The Lodge at Pebble Beach is home to America’s most famous golf course, as well as having a well-regarded spa; numerous restaurants; and tennis, swimming and sailing facilities

Our review
A long drive through a pine forest, with a doe and her fawn enjoying the sunshine in a break in the trees, had us at The Pebble Beach resort. It is most famous for its golf course, open to the public but having among the highest green fees in the world, meaning you would have to be a very rich member of the public.
It’s a professional course and one of the most photographed in the world, with the Ryder Cup and US Open having been played here. As the name suggests, it’s on the coast, with the final hole having the ocean to the left and a tree in the middle of the fairway.
But Pebble Beach is not just all about golf, although the golf facilities here are superb.
In particular, I loved the spa, which really is top of the range. It has 24 treatment rooms in its 22,000 square-foot facility. On offer are massages, body scrubs and wraps, water treatments, facials, waxing, tinting, nail care and hair care. There is a whirlpool, sauna and Eucalyptus steam room in both the men’s and women’s facility. The lovely relaxation room has a living flame fire with gorgeous complimentary snacks such as fruit and nut bars and drinks such as passion fruit and raspberry tea. A heated outdoor pool is a further feature. A small gift shop stocks all the products used in the spa, that are also used in guest bathrooms.
For tennis fans, the Beach and Tennis Club, free to guests at The Lodge, also has sailing, swimming and a gym.
Rooms at The Lodge are traditionally designed, furnished in rich earth colours and making the most of sea views where possible. All have balconies or terraces and free Wi-Fi, most have log-effect gas fires and some larger suites have a whirlpool tub on an outside deck.
There are a variety of dining options at the resort – we didn’t get an opportunity to try any.
If you play golf or want a decent spa and like being near the coast, this resort would make an excellent choice.
