San Francisco, USA
Five-star luxury in SoMa, offering refined dining, an expansive spa and direct access to San Francisco’s leading cultural institution

Our review
The St Regis is a skyscraper hotel in the SoMa district near the Yerba Buena Gardens and housing the Museum of the African Dispora, so very handy for art and museum lovers.
Continuing with the art theme, the hotel has a series of hand waxed rose petal inspired pieces by a Canadian artist. The petals look like they have been blown in through the front doors and feature throughout the hotel. I thought they were stunningly original.
The St Regis bars all have an interesting artwork as a focal point and their own Bloody Mary recipe. A huge painting of possibly St George and the Dragon graces this bar, suspended lights hanging from the ceiling. Large artwork by the same artist is located in the lobby area. The distinctive lounge area, refurbished in late 2012 has black leather sofas, a living flame waist height feature gas fire and bowls of purple and blue anemone.
Guest rooms are light and bright with room rates differentiated by position and view as much as size. Roman blinds are preferred to curtains, to make the most of the light. Beds are mainly dressed in white, with cushions and wall art adding some colour to the understated look. I liked the padded benches some rooms had at the bottom of the bed, ideal for the suitcase and an easier place to organise unpacking. Some rooms had a chaise lounges under the window in soft grey and white stripes. There is ample room for storage in all the rooms we saw. At each bedside is a guest digital controller for temperature, lighting and blinds. All rooms have a bath with separate shower. I liked the fact that some showers had a bench; ideal for those who don’t like to stand for too long, or like me, take ages to wash their hair. Remede toiletries are the same products as those used in their spa.
Which brings me on to the spa. It is really stunning and feels luxurious from the moment you enter. There is a whirlpool, sauna and steam room in both the women’s and men’s facilities. There is also a gorgeous infinity indoor pool to enjoy before or after your treatment.
