Our review
The Hotel Monaco, a Kimpton hotel is located in downtown Seattle, very handily placed for Pike Place market and the seafront with Ferris wheel and excellent fish and chip shop.
Kimpton hotels like to make use of old buildings; in this case it is a former telephone exchange. Kimpton hotels usually have a good restaurant and bar attached; here it’s the Sazerac. We had perfectly fine drinks and snacks at the bar.
The large hotel lobby is welcoming and has a homely feel, with prints, lamps and disparate sofas and fireside chairs. An open gas fire and chandeliers are stylish extras. A feature of the hotel is complimentary morning coffee served here and free wine during the happy hour in the early evening. Staff are generally very helpful. Our luggage was whisked out of the taxi and taken to our room without any delay.
We had a king room with jazzy grey wallpaper, maroon walls, dark grey wood effect flooring and a comfortable king-size bed. Use had been made of the space underneath the windows to create a useful seat. With white shutters, this was an attractive feature. The jazzy wallpaper theme continued into the bathroom with marble sink, refillable toiletries and shower over the bath. In the room is a yoga mat – which served to make me feel guilty. (There is a 24 hour access gym on site too.) There is no room safe but valuables may be left safely at reception. Instead of boring white towelling robes, they have animal print ones. I wasn’t keen on the live goldfish loan plan – to keep loners company I suppose – but I did like the free newspaper and free overnight shoeshine service.
Kimpton hotels are keen on protecting the environment and belong to an EarthCare programme. As well as using eco friendly cleaning products, they try to use local and organic food in their restaurants, which I applaud.
Overall we enjoyed our stay; this is a no nonsense hotel with little extras included as standard. The great location is another bonus.
