Portland, Oregon, USA
Named The Nines because it occupies the top nine floors of a former department store Meier & Frank, this modern art hotel in downtown Portland has a well-regarded restaurant and 24 hour fitness facility

Our review
The Nines is so called because it occupies the top nine floors of a former department store, Meier & Frank built in 1909.
From the outside, it’s an ordinary office building. But take the lift to the eight floor and prepare to be surprised. The modern open plan atrium lobby is certainly unlike any other I have seen. Two full size female mannequins in black and white stand to attention on the shining dark wooden flooring, a solitary white armchair to one side and an outsize chain necklace to the other. Seating arrangements of Chesterfield sofas on large rugs are separated from meeting rooms by gauze curtains with leaf detail, glass walls or short marble ones, with decorated roofs, making one feel like an ant in a huge Lego set. Work by local artists is carefully placed around the space. In one corner is the restaurant – Urban Farmers and the stylish bar, with plenty of solo seating. As the name suggests, this serves cutting edge farm to table fare. There is also an Asian restaurant on the roof with two decks for outdoor dining.
On all four sides tower the hotel’s 300 odd rooms with 13 suites. Our guide is proud to tell us that Clark Gable used to sell ties in the department store below in the 1920s. Rooms are decorated in bold colours, but it’s not overdone; cream with vibrant turquoise or green with deep purple and use is made as much as possible of the natural light. Wi-Fi is free and eco toiletries BeKind in refillable pumps grace the bathrooms, some of which just have a rainfall shower.
A particular feature of the hotel is the Club floor on the 12th level, where guests have access to complimentary food and drinks.
The fitness suite is extremely well equipped and of a decent size but it is a shame there is no room for a sauna. I’m told pets are very welcome here, contact the hotel for more information.
A modern stylish art hotel, that attracts the hip crowd, it is certainly an attractive option, especially considering its downtown location.
