Our review

Opened in 1927, The Heathman is a member of Historic Hotels of America.   As a liveried doorman opens the door for you (dressed a bit like a British Beefeater), you step into a hotel oozing history. Renovations in recent years have been in grand Art Deco style.  The hotel encourages links with Portland art culture and supports local art initiatives.  The hotel has a piece of original art in every room, 11 Andy Warhol originals and a spectacular mural by Hank Pander.  I really liked this aspect of the hotel.  A fabulous chandelier makes a statement in the lobby and then a mezzanine floor is crammed with walls of art.

The beautiful wood-panelled lobby with fireplace becomes a Tea Court from Wednesday to Saturday with high tea served all year. On some evenings, there is live jazz, with artists changing every few months.  There are more treats in store.  In the library are 2,500 books, some signed by the authors, all of whom have stayed here.  Guests are welcome to read them during their stay.

Rooms all have a light touch of Art Deco, such as the sunrise bedheads and round cushions.  There is free Wi-Fi, guests can choose the mattress type and complimentary water and cafetiere coffee (French press) is available in every room.  Bathrooms are small and the basin is tiny, but this is a historic hotel and the L’Occitane toiletries go some way to make up this shortfall.

The Heathman restaurant, The Tavern, serves seasonal Pacific Northwest cuisine, locally sourced. Portland has set the bar high for food experiences and this restaurant is very well regarded locally.

If you appreciate art and literature, this old master is a good bet.
