Our review

The Royal Monceau closed for a four-year refurbishment under the guidance of designer Philippe Starck and re-opened in 2010. As a result, it is very art-focused and the designer’s touches are seen everywhere. Just off the lobby is the art store, with curated art for sale and high up around the lobby walls is a shelf displaying more artwork and books. The hotel has the world’s only art concierge, who organises the hotel’s changing exhibition of works and knows everything there is to know about modern art in Paris.

A screening room holds 99 seats (with one red one) and the hotel holds a regular Sunday night screening club with a movie, popcorn and champagne.

After all this artfulness downstairs, I wasn’t expecting ordinary rooms. Indeed, rooms are white and bright, making the most of the light. Beds are at an angle and not against a wall, arranged to catch the morning sun. Large mirrors are prominent, and arranged opposite the bed, so be prepared to find your naked self reflected back at you in all its glory in the morning. Each room has a small hallway and there is free Wi-Fi and plenty of Starck touches, like the desk at an angle making it easier to write, an acoustic guitar and a useful map of Paris as a blotter.

The hotel has two restaurants, La Carpaccio has a Michelin star.

Spa facilities are excellent. The longest indoor pool in Paris is complemented by seven treatment rooms using Clarins My Blend products – exclusive to the hotel – with a fitness room next door with yoga and Pilates classes on offer.

If you like modern art, you will love this hotel. Even if you don’t, the two excellent restaurants, superb spa facilities and original rooms may well sway you.
