Our review

The Royal Riviera is a breath of fresh air with its relaxed and friendly atmosphere; obvious from the moment we arrived, with smiling, welcoming staff. I imagine this hotel will appeal to families and those who want a smart hotel but not a starchy one.

Typical of the villas of the period, the foyer has marble floors and iron balustrades on the stairs. But as with most hotels in the south of France it’s all about the outside. The property has direct access to a sandy beach that is open from May to September, when sun is almost guaranteed. The heated pool, near the restaurant, is open all year with sun loungers.

The 94 rooms are either Provencal in style, contemporary or Art Deco. Most have separate bath and shower and sea views. A few rooms, particularly suitable for families are in the Orangerie. In excellent condition, guest rooms are regularly refurbished. Many have terraces or balconies. There is free Wi-Fi and complimentary parking. A nice touch is pillow spray at turndown.

We had a delicious lunch at the poolside bar. We enjoyed a truffle thin crust pizza to share to start, garnished with rocket. After our main meal, I was tempted to indulge in the strawberry tart. It has a light pate sucree base and was filled with baby strawberries and custard cream. There is also a gourmet restaurant for more formal dining where they offer a Sunday brunch as well as evening service.

The hotel is centrally placed in the village of Beaulieu-sur-Mer, so if you like a base from which to explore the surrounding area on foot, this hotel would make a good choice.
