Our review

The Chevre d’Or is situated in the medieval hilltop village of Eze.

Originally a restaurant, the first owners started to buy up surrounding houses opened it as a hotel in subsequent years, being one of the original members of Relais and Chateau in the 1950s.

The hotel has private terraced gardens with spectacular views down to the sea, hundreds of feet below. Although there is valet car parking and a fairly level walk through the grounds to reach reception, one needs to be fairly able-bodied to cope with the numerous stairs and different levels of the property at the hotel.

One advantage of the different levels is that there are numerous quiet spots to sit and read a book or sunbathe; everyone isn’t crammed together. There is a small pool with sundeck and other sun decks and an outdoor Jacuzzi.

A focus of the hotel is the superb two-Michelin star food on offer in the gourmet restaurant and the less formal dining options. The kitchen is busy and popular and 45 people are employed to make sure all the food is first class from the pastries to the bread to the cheese. We had a tour of the kitchen that was still working hard in the late afternoon. When we had a welcome cup of coffee after our tour, we sampled the skill of the pastry chef and chocolatier: sublime.

Rooms are all different and scattered on and around the property. Simply furnished, with all the luxurious touches one needs, the rough stonewalls and exposed oak beams ooze history. Local perfumer Fragonard supplies the toiletries and the room infusers; the latter changing with the seasons.

The stylish bar – in regal purple and maroon velvet with a full set of armour standing on guard – is a welcome refuge when it gets too warm outside or the thought of a vintage cognac tempts you in. But the Golden Goat is an outdoors place; somewhere to enjoy the sunshine and its unique position.

The pretty town of Eze is there to explore, literally on the doorstep; but how lovely to know one would be returning to this delightful hotel for the night.
