Our review

Walk into this Four Seasons, opened in 2012, and you know you are somewhere special. The lobby is striking – tall oriental style black screens dwarf the space and giant dandelion heads and birds suspended from the ceiling add an interesting backdrop to the check-in desk.

The lobby level bar is busy and buzzing on our early evening arrival, so much so that we had to wait a few moments to be shown to a spare sofa. Ensconced, I enjoyed an excellent non-alcoholic cocktail. I mention this as far too few places bother to cater for those who don’t want to drink alcohol. It comprised pear juice, cinnamon syrup, ginger beer and rosemary. Quite delicious.

We had a lovely Premier one-bedroom corner suite. The décor was modern and understated with pale ash grey wooden floor. There was a corner sofa in a slubby beige fabric, with little hints of the Orient in the prints of cherry blossom on the walls. There were plenty of sockets for chargers and an iPod dock, together with an iPad. A Nespresso coffee machine was a welcome addition as was the free Wi-Fi.

The guest bathroom had a freestanding washbasin, more arty than practical but it did have a shower too, a useful extra, especially if you want to make use of the sofa that doubles as a bed. Sliding doors led to the bedroom with ample wardrobe storage. The large bed was extremely comfortable as were the sink-into pillows. The bathroom had a deep tub and walk-in shower. Toiletries are by Etro and made exclusively for the hotel.

Breakfast is taken on the first floor, in the Café Boulud, run by the eponymous French chef. This is an attractive room with large modern prints of famous icons by a Canadian artist. One had to order a la carte, which I don’t mind as I like standard fare, but Paul prefers a buffet as he only eats a small amount of items and would rather choose himself. He also doesn’t like to wait for things at breakfast time; he’s more a ‘grab and go’ person ie coffee, yoghurt, maybe toast. He left me in my element with Bircher muesli, Pear Tartine and Lemon Ricotta pancakes on the menu, amongst other deliciousness.

The spa is the biggest in town and possibly the best. On the 9th floor, there are good views, 17 treatment rooms, a nail bar and hair salon. There is a pool with shallow end and Jacuzzi. The spa is open every day.

The Four Seasons, Toronto is a stylish hotel with good spa, restaurant and bar.
