Chicago, USA
Providing the heritage and refined luxury of the original, The Langham Chicago close to the Magnificent Mile in downtown offers fine dining, relaxation and a fabulous spa for pampering

Our review
The Langham Hotel opened in Chicago in late 2013. It’s a modern hotel but housed in a historic landmark building, in a style closely aligned to Bauhaus, designed by Mies van de Rohe in his signature industrial aesthetic.
I had a River View corner suite with double aspect floor to ceiling windows and wonderful views over the Loop and water below. In the entrance hall area was a chaise longue and then into the lounge diner was a wall of windows, a large desk/dressing table, large sofa; and table and chairs for in-room dining or entertaining. There was a wet bar and a Titanic-size flat screen television. In the separate bedroom was a king-size bed with extremely comfortable linen and pillows, another large television and ample storage in wardrobes and drawers. Free wifi comes as standard as does a coffee machine.
The bathroom is well equipped with deep tubs, separate shower with rainfall or hand held option and double sinks. Exclusive Chuan spa toiletries and a heated towel rail left me wanting for nothing.
I rattled around in the spacious suite on my own but being able to close the bedroom door made it feel very cosy.
The Travelle restaurant focuses on seasonal American cuisine. Despite dining on my own, with my window seat overlooking Marina Towers, I felt very comfortable. A backlit wall of wine bottles showcases some of the 1400 labels available. From an interesting menu one could choose grilled octopus, suckling pig or chicken wings, diners’ favourites according to my waiter. I particularly enjoyed the interesting cheese selection; the moreish home baked bread and the thickened olive oil, ideal for dunking without the attendant drips.
Having a suite entitles use of the Club Room lounge, a real boon if you want to sort out your own drinks and have a few snacks during the day. It’s a lovely place to read or even catch up on some work on your laptop. I had breakfast here one day and afternoon tea on another. (Club Room access can be paid for as an add-on if you want to use the facility and don’t have a suite.)
The Chuan spa here proved irresistible. There was a four part bathing ritual to enjoy – a herbal sauna (sage, rosemary and mint), a salt stone sauna, an aromatherapy shower and finally an Oriental steam room.
There is a Dream Room relaxation lounge where you may listen to soothing music under dim lights and my favourite, a quiet room with stone contoured heated beds, where you can just relax in peace.
I had a wonderful calming facial in one of the seven treatment rooms with a skilled therapist. Note prices jump a bit at the weekend, and that any time on a Friday counts as the weekend.
In my little tour of the hotel, I was shown the kids’ suite. This is a lounge for children and is equipped with the latest toys and books for very little ones up to teenagers, with Nintendos and X boxes. Parents must supervise at all times, but what a boon if you bring a child with you and they invariably get a bit bored.
