Our review
Sometimes when you have seen a hotel’s website, you are disappointed with the real thing. This is one of the reasons we inspect each hotel. It’s not very often though, that a hotel is even better than its stunning images on the Internet would lead you to believe. Such is the case with Cap Rocat.
After passing through a manned gate, you park and then descend stone steps to the former fortress, part carved out of the sandstone cliffs and part build with blocks of the same material. The end result is a soft peachy stone building, set against the dramatic blue of the Mediterranean, with the occasional cypress tree adding a shot of green and a simple fountain providing a backing track to the birdsong.
This is a place to enjoy some adult peace and quiet and the glorious outdoors. This may be either on your private terrace outside your front door or up on your second terrace with full size sunbed and uninterrupted views of the ocean.
Suites are big rooms where the best use has been made of the space. Beds may be canopied and decoration is kept simple, perhaps just a couple of blown up prints of Majorca in the 1950s. There is ample storage space, handily placed in the bathroom where you need it. All suites have his and hers sinks and separate bath and shower. Much thought has gone into anticipating guests’ needs. As well as umbrellas, the hotel provides the much more likely to be needed straw hat in the rooms. Toiletries have also been given thought: A Mallorcan company has been chosen to make them exclusively; they are in large glass bottles, rather than those impractical and wasteful tiny plastic ones; and they have been designed to snap neatly in half should you drop them on the tiles, rather than shatter into a thousand pieces.
Breakfast is served in a huge basket – with items of your choice – on your terrace at a time to suit. You may want to enjoy it in bed or up on the sun terrace.
There is an outdoor pool with attractive loungers or you may want to wend your way down to the water and sunbathe on loungers above the rocks. A ladder leads down to the sea and a rocky cove if you fancy a dip.
Near here is the Sea Club restaurant with probably the best views on the island. We enjoyed a fine lunch here. I had an avocado and asparagus salad, followed by a vegetable risotto; Paul enjoyed fresh prawns in their shells with rosemary potatoes as a side. His pudding – berry cheesecake – served in a kilner jar was one of the best he has ever had. The comprehensive wine list also had some from Mallorca.
Golf buggies are available to ferry you around although there are slopes rather than steps.
The gourmet restaurant is open in the evening and is near the accommodation. It’s predominantly white with huge swags of caramel coloured linen curtains.
There is a small spa with two treatment rooms.
For a quiet escape to enjoy the sun and perhaps to do a bit of snorkelling or wild swimming, Cap Rocat would seem perfect.
