Deià, Mallorca, Spain
Hillside luxury retreat in Deià set among olive groves, known for art, fine dining and tranquil spa facilities in the Tramuntana mountains

Our review
Situated next to the artist’s colony of Deia, this glorious hotel used to belong to Richard Branson. Rather than playing lip service to art, the hotel’s art credentials are well established and genuine. It houses the town’s art gallery, and has done so for thirty years, promoting the work of local artists. As well as a sculptor in residence, offering classes – and one of the best sculpture gardens in the hotel grounds – there is an artist in residence offering the same. The hotel’s ceramicist also offers tuition. And the art gallery’s curator organises art walks for guests.
Another lovely activity is to go on an uphill trek with the hotel’s two donkeys to the restored stone shepherd’s hut, with views over the bay. Here you can enjoy a delicious picnic, organised by the hotel chef.
If you want to stay put, the hotel has tennis courts and a tennis coach. Feeling less active, you have two pools to choose from outside and an indoor one. Or you can have a spa treatment or just sunbathe.
We enjoyed a very good lunch at Café Miro, on the terrace on the day we visited, overlooking the gardens.
The 30-acre gardens are exceptionally well kept and pretty, with dry stone walls and winding crazy paved pathways encouraging exploration.
There are four buildings altogether and some climbing might be required – to get to the spa, for example – although this is up slopes rather than stairs. If mobility is an issue, discuss with reception when booking to make sure you get a suitable room.
This is an exceedingly good hotel with experienced hands-on management. I have no hesitation in recommending it.
