Our review

I have a soft spot for Bahia del Duque because it is the first hotel we visited for Travel de la Creme. The lovely general manager did not know us from Adam as at that time we had no website to show him, but he still spent the best part of three hours showing us around his wonderful hotel.

Tenerife is still seen by many as being a bit downmarket, filled with Brits arriving on budget carriers to soak up some winter sun as inexpensively as possible. Burger and chips, tacky souvenirs and cheap booze are the other attractions.

Bahia Del Duque will change your mind about that. It’s a fabulous luxury resort, but not at all snooty or pretentious. Build a bit like a fairy-tale castle, it has low rise buildings and restaurants dotted around the landscaped grounds; turning a corner will reveal a surprise – another swimming pool surrounded by shrubbery and fountains, a tennis court, or even an observatory. British Airways flies here so you can avoid the budget carriers if you wish and transfer from the airport is easy.

If there isn’t enough to entertain you in this vast resort, it is right on the edge of a sandy beach and the hotel can arrange boat trips and days out.

Rooms are excellent with free Wi-Fi, marble bathrooms and Aqua di Parma toiletries (Paul’s favourite) in the suites. In a separate building are the more prestigious suites – Casas Ducales – with separate check-in, butler, complimentary drinks, lounge area and private solarium. Even better are the villas with their own private pools.

There is a really nice spa with seawater treatments and so many games on offer – billiards, pitch and putt, tennis, bridge, giant chess and squash, it might be hard to choose.

Although they cater very well for children, they have several adult-only areas, so it’s perfect for romantic breaks too.

We have been so busy, we have not had a chance to return, but this is one place I would love to go to for a relaxing break in the future. Highly recommended.
