Our review
Adare Manor is like a fairy-tale castle, built in the Gothic style, complete with French knot garden, sweeping lawns, its own lake and golf course.
Some parts of the building date to the 1700s. It’s called a calendar house with 365 windows, 52 chimneys, four towers and seven pillars. We saw the Minstrels Gallery with a long single table set for 100 guests. Guided house tours are available most days at 2.30pm.
The indoor pool has views of the 18th hole. Near here is Lavender Cottage with four beauty treatment rooms using Darphin products.
Our room – 405 – was a deluxe and overlooked the gardens, knot garden and lake. Spacious and comfortable, the room had a king size bed, stand alone antique wardrobe, cheval mirror and Victorian fireplace (non working). There was also a large desk and coffee table with two fireside chairs. The windows opened, which pleased me as I prefer fresh air to air-conditioning when it’s not too warm. There were ample sockets near the bed for charging devices. The building had creaking floorboards and we could hear people walking past our room; this doesn’t bother me as I regard it as part of the character of a historic hotel. Wi-Fi was free and easy to log in.
The large bathroom had a powerful, easy to operate shower and a slip mat was provided. Because there was a window, there was good, natural light for make up and shaving. I loved the L’Occitane toiletries and soft velour robes – much cosier than heavy towelling. I would have liked a small chair to sit on.
Before dinner, we enjoyed a cocktail in the bar. The public rooms are glorious, with real open fires and heaps of atmosphere. I loved the small flower arrangements on each coffee table – a chunky miniature crystal vase with a single hyacinth flower and a sprig of gypsophila We then had dinner in the Michelin-starred Oak Room Restaurant that has won several awards, including Best Restaurant in Limerick 2015. Proper candles (not tea lights) were set on each table and at strategic places around the room. As the light fell, this was the only illumination – or appeared to be. There is something comforting about flickering candlelight at night; maybe it reminds me of a more carefree time. There was not much choice for vegetarians, but my meal was so delicious – chick pea fritters with a mint sauce accompaniment – that I was perfectly happy. Service was impeccable.
Breakfast was lovely with a small, well-presented buffet. Orange juice and stewed prunes were both good. I enjoyed an excellent Egg Florentine, cooked exactly how I like it.
With the river nearby and over 800 acres to explore, this is the perfect place for a restful break, golfer or not.
Our stay was brief but almost perfect. Definitely one to consider for a trip to Ireland.
