Our review

The hotel is set in large gardens and is quietly situated yet is very near central Killarney and all its attractions.

The area is known for its world class links golf courses with five of them within easy driving distance, so this hotel is something of a magnet for golfers.

Public rooms are cosy and all have open fires – real wood or gas-fired – with plenty of room for enjoying a coffee and relaxing with the newspaper or a book.

The hotel has an attractive bar, with a couple of raised alcoves, and has a well-regarded whiskey selection.

The large indoor pool is a feature of the wellness area that also has a spa with eight treatment rooms offering Eve Lom and Elemis products.

We had a contemporary junior suite with two rooms divided by a glass wall. In the lounge area was a gas effect fire, leather sofa and flat screen television. The large desk had several power sockets nearby and there were also a table with two dining chairs for in room dining. Off this was a balcony. We had a large, comfortable king-size bed with padded headboard and pop up television. There was complimentary water, a Nespresso machine and a free Irish newspaper.

The large bathroom was simply tiled with contrasting iridescent blue mosaic ones as well. I liked the toilet being in a separate stall. There was also an inset television. As in our suite, all guestrooms have a separate bath and shower. Paul said the bath took a while to fill and I found the pressure in the shower a little low. I appreciated the heated towel rail and lighting was good. I enjoyed using the hairdryer fixed to the wall; it worked very well. The sinks were a modern design but splashed a bit when running the cold tap. The bathroom was plenty large enough for a stool and I would have liked one, if only to enjoy the Elemis body cream more.

A fitted ironing board and iron were in a handy cupboard near the main door, together with an inbuilt trouser press, a nice feature.

Our room was a little masculine for my taste. Later, we saw the classical suites, more traditional in style, and these would have suited me better, but Paul of course preferred the one we had.

Breakfast was very good. I had my usual freshly squeezed orange juice and prunes. Egg white omelette was almost perfect, perhaps a tad too greasy for my taste, but I’m being nit picky. I felt my tea could have been served in a fine china cup instead of the chunky cup I was given, which jarred a bit with the silver coffee pot, tea pot and cutlery. Paul reported his smoked salmon with trimmings to be very tasty.

This hotel is very centrally located for exploring the natural beauty and other attractions of the area, and with spacious rooms and suites and lovely spa, makes for a compelling choice.
