Donegal, Ireland
Lough Eske Castle in Donegal is an imposing 19th century building set in 43 acres close to Lough Eske itself. It has large guest rooms, wood-burning fires, an indoor pool and spa

Our review
Built in 1868 to resemble a castle, on the site of the former manor house, the hotel sits in 43 acres of landscaped grounds that contain 28 bronze sculptures by various artists.
Privately owned until 1939, the State took over ownership after the war. Following subsequent years of neglect, the castle was restored in 2006 and opened as a hotel in 2008.
There are now cosy public areas with sofa arrangements around wood burning fires, or with pretty table arrangements set up for afternoon tea replete with white linen clothes and Wedgewood china.
Rooms are either in the main house, courtyard or garden. The garden suites are especially popular with children and dog owners, both types of guest welcome here.
We had a deluxe room – 226 – double aspect with views over the gardens. Windows could open too. There was a half poster king-size bed with large ottoman at the base. The room was decorated in mainly beige tones with dark brown cedar wood furniture, cinnamon tones in the fabrics adding a shot of colour. We had fast, free Wi-Fi, complimentary water and a proper kettle with filter coffee (cafetiere supplied).
The bathroom was large and square with a leather-topped fitted wooden bureau with drawers on entering that was useful for wash bags. There were double sinks and marble flooring in grey. The deep bath filled quickly. The shower had two options – hand held or rainforest, with grab rail and non-slip floor. There was a heated towel rail and the toilet had its own stall.
We had dinner in the bar. Food was fine if not exceptional, but perhaps you don’t expect that in a casual setting. Beer selection was very good and there is a choice of 90 whiskeys.
There is also an indoor pool and the eight-room spa uses Aromatherapy Associates products.
For an Irish escape in Donegal, this hotel is a good bet with large rooms, pleasant gardens and spa.
