Our review
Only a forty-minute or so drive from Venice, the Grand Hotel Abano in the spa town of Abano Terme was an extremely pleasant surprise. If you are en route to Verona, another hour away, you may want to consider stopping here or devise a two-centre plan if you are visiting Venice.
In a town of hotels, this one stands out from the rest as it is five star luxury. Set in spacious gardens, it has 189 rooms. A feature of the hotel of course is its spa; I’ve never seen one with over 50 treatment rooms before. As well as beauty spa treatments, the hotel offers proper medical spa treatments using local mud and thermal water and is so beneficial, guests visit regularly for two weeks at a time. Some treatments are part-funded by the government, so effective are they. The spa has its own doctors and nutritionists to advise guests.
There are three large thermal pools, cooled to room temperature offering both indoor and outdoor opportunities, so the hotel can be enjoyed in the winter as well as the summer. All around the pools are ample sunbeds. A Venetian spa was opened in 2014, with hammam, hot and cold treatments, Swedish sauna and aromatherapy shower.
I had a Bacchus face and body treatment while I was there and thoroughly enjoyed it. My skin felt silky smooth afterwards. I found the fact that I was being treated with enzyme rich mud with grape gel and mineral rich thermal water – all natural – completely fascinating.
We had a deluxe panoramic view room on the fifth floor with balcony and views of the mountains and over the outdoor swimming pool. We had tables, chairs and sunbeds.
Our room was carpeted and the colour scheme was lemon and soft blue. There was attractive marble topping on the furniture such as chest of drawers, side tables and dressing table. Ample space for our suitcases and a large wardrobe ticked more boxes. Air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi come as standard.
The brown and white marble bathroom had a separate shower and one sink. Toiletries were the hotel’s own. A plug for a hairdryer and a mirror nearby (with hairdryer supplied) together with a magnifying mirror were other features I liked. Other essentials such as cotton wool pads and buds, shower cap and tissues were thoughtful additions. There are towelling robes in two colours: white for the swimming pools and blue if you are having a treatment.
Apart from the decent size, my overall impression of the room was how clean it was; I could say that for the whole hotel: excellent housekeeping.
Breakfast is taken on the first floor and was perfectly pleasant. There is a help yourself buffet with a large range of options as well as hot choices.
Lunch and dinner are taken in a grand salon room on the ground floor. A feature of both is that some of the meal is self-service. So your starter and antipasti you help yourself to. Then a waiter takes your order for two more courses. Then you help yourself to dessert from the buffet table. If you are on a slimming package, I expect lunch and dinner could be something of a challenge, as the food is so good. But there is plenty of low calorie choice and in fact, your nutritionist would advise you as to what you should eat. Being vegetarian, I thought my food would be quite dull, but I was proved wrong. An excellent parmigiana and a lovely carrot and ginger soup are two dishes I remember particularly fondly.
The bar serves very good cocktails and a pianist is in attendance most evenings.
The hotel is ‘old school’ in that waiters wear neat uniforms and remove your silver cloche over the hot food with a flourish. The clientele is also definitely middle aged or older. But I like this and it fits with the hotel vibe, which is rather genteel. People come here to relax, recuperate, energise; not sit glued to their iPhone or enquire about nightclubs. There seem to be very few British guests; we would certainly be missing a trick by not plugging in to this delightful place.
