Bangalore, India
Brimming with history, the low-rise Taj West End set in 20 acres of landscaped grounds offers calm respite from the buzzing city with fine dining restaurants, spa, two swimming pools, and rooms offering butler service

Our review
We’ve stayed at the Taj West End on over twenty-five occasions, more than at any other luxury hotel. So we regard it a bit like home. Colonial style low build buildings are scattered throughout several acres of gardens. Its had some changes over the years; not all of which have met with my approval, but it’s still one of my favourite hotels. Housekeeping is among the best I have ever come across.
The two outdoor swimming pools are hidden in lush gardens and rarely busy, so perfect for relaxing with a book. We like the rooms in the main building better than the more contemporary ones in the gardens. The main house guest rooms have high ceilings and are very quiet.
The Blue Ginger restaurant is consistently appealing, not least for its gorgeous position above water gardens in the hotel grounds. The Blue Bar is pleasant enough, best for nursing a cold beer on a hot night. They do tasty mocktails too (try the minty peach). Machan restaurant has its moments – breakfast is very good with great service – but room service food, especially the Indian dishes are excellent. We tend to avoid the hotel and go out for Sunday brunch, unless you want to be with a crowd of boozy expats or wealthy Indians, sometimes with badly behaved children running amok.
The rest of the week, the hotel is peaceful, even it would appear when it is full. There are wonderful landscaped gardens to explore and a tour that takes about an hour is recommended.
