Our review

Independently owned and extensively refurbished in 2006, this 100-year old villa was once the town house of an aristocratic family. Situated in a quiet, residential area, the villa still feels likes a home as you ring the doorbell to be admitted.  Into the impressive hallway and up the winding staircase, your delightful resting place awaits you at the top.  The lounge, library and morning room are filled with tasteful antiques.  To the rear is a garden and covered area for al fresco dining and space to park your car. There are 15 rooms, all individually designed, and not a dud among them. We had a romantic double – a large room with king-size bed, writing desk, small table with two chairs and marble bathroom with deep soaking tub and large shower. With full-length windows with wooden shutters and various antiques, the last thing it felt like was a hotel room.  Bed linen is hand embroidered and deliciously soft as are the pillows.  I liked the peace and quiet in the middle of Rome and the fact that the light switches at the side of the bed were old-fashioned brass buttons. The mini bar has complimentary drinks, refilled daily. In the bathroom is a large shower as well as bath with Molton Brown toiletries.

Cocktails are available in the lounge or library every evening – you just help yourself. If it’s not the summer season, a fire will be burning. On Fridays there is wine tasting with wine from the owners’ vineyard.

Breakfast can be a quiet affair, with church whispers if there is only one other couple dining at the same time, but this to me is far preferable to some inane musak blasting out.  I liked the fact that there was no piped music, so overdone in other places one even gets it in the restroom and lift. The food was delicious and of the highest quality. There was bread, croissants, pastries and plenty of preserves, cheeses, meats and hot items to order.

A special tip if you are staying for more than a few days or you have family with you is to take a look at the apartment, with two bedrooms; and the garden suite with a sofa bed in the lounge.

Staff were discreet but available to deal with any query.

The local area has plenty to offer, so do go exploring on foot as we did.

This is such a lovely find, I almost want to keep it to myself. But then I would be depriving so many people of enjoying this delightful place.
