Our review
Capri is a tiny island – six kilometres long and three wide – poking out of the Tyrrhenian Sea just south of Naples. Getting to Capri is an adventure in itself. Traffic is restricted to mainly taxis and buses and access is by ferry or hydrofoil. The journey takes around 45 minutes. It was a bit of a mission to get our heavy suitcases on board but when we arrived at the island, our hotel had an MPV waiting for us.
Capri has always had a film star feel about it. I can remember my mother always wanted to go – possibly because Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Onassis and Sophia Loren already had. Capri pants derived their name from Grace Kelly first being photographed wearing the new style trousers here. Driving uphill, it was a short journey to Anacapri, where the hotel is situated. Capri is rocky and the roads are steep. It has been inhabited since Roman times and land is scarce, so one will not find large areas of lawn or indeed, sandy beaches. But one does find old walls with bougainvillea cascading down and tiny cafes built under cliffs.
The hotel was everything I had expected – stylish and chic. It is predominantly decorated in its signature white, with pure white walls and white floor tiles. In the large lounge area are squishy cream leather sofas, 1950s photographers’ floor lamps on black metal stands, black ceiling fans and original pieces of well chosen modern art work. A striking half girl is poised over the bar and there is a full size boat installation used as a coffee table with flat TV monitors in the interior representing moving water. Beyond here is the large wooden sundeck/terrace with views over Anacapri and the sea beyond, dotted with potted lemon trees, lavender and in the ground ahead and to the side, various pines.
We stayed in the Audrey Hepburn Suite, a vision of simplicity, with cream, hand-painted floor tiles, mushroom and off-white fabrics and large black and white prints of the beautiful actor. In the sitting area was a large sofa and patio doors leading to a balcony with armchairs and views of the sea. In the spacious marble bathroom were Penhaligon toiletries.
The hotel is only open for six months a year and we were there in the first few days, so it was quiet. I did not care for the live singing with pianist in the lounge in the evening – it felt a bit cruise ship, but perhaps is better when more people are there. Unusually, there was a prolonged thunderstorm and it was cool outside, so not much opportunity to enjoy the warm sunshine.
Breakfast was very dignified and carried out under hushed tones. Tables were dressed to impress, with a full complement of linen and silver. The buffet food was amongst the best I have eaten anywhere and my eggs Benedict, made to order, were faultless. If breakfast can be this good – delicious freshly squeezed juice (not just orange) wonderful butter, tart marmalade, proper tea, fresh exotic fruits, tasty smoked salmon, a selection of different breads, some local, mostly homemade – it makes my heart sing.
We visited the spa but did not get a chance to try it. There is also a small swimming pool – with one side formed from clear glass exposing swimmers to passing tourists – a typical quirky touch.
The rooms and especially the suites are truly spectacular and all different. They are unashamedly modern and a shrine to both glamour and contemporary art. Possibly my favourite was the Magritte room, with his striking ‘city gent’ wallpaper in the bathroom. Some suites have their own outdoor pools with private terrace – the Andy Warhol has his Chairman Mao picture hand painted on the bottom.
One does not come here to save money but to indulge; it is a special occasion place, where perhaps, just for a while, one can live the dolce vita.
Last word: Iconic hotel that lives up to the hype.
