Arosa, Switzerland
Tschuggen Grand Hotel sits perched up a mountain slope in the town of Arosa, surrounded by pine forest and offers Michelin-star dining, a private railway and an architecturally impressive spa

Our review
The hotel is approached via a winding road that ends at Arosa village. Since it is a dead end, the road is not cleared of snow for the last couple of miles to give it a snowy, wintery feel. It’s as if you have left reality behind and are driving into a Christmas card.
A former sanatorium, the building became a hotel in the 1920s. It’s not the prettiest of buildings from the outside, but inside it is lovely.
Before we go inside, I need to tell you about their wonderful private train – the Tschuggen Express – that takes you to the mountaintop and the cable car. It’s worth doing the five-minute journey even if you are not going to ski as the views are wonderful and it’s an interesting experience.
Serious skiers will love this ski in ski out hotel – at 1800 metres – with well-equipped ski room and easy access to the slopes.
There is also an excellent 12-treatment-room spa – one of the largest in Europe and with its pointed glass roofs looking like something from Dr Who – built in 2006. There are also private spa facilities with Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.
We had a lovely junior suite with balcony overlooking the mountains. A third of all rooms are suites or junior suites and have mountain views. From the balcony or even from our windows, we could watch people skiing.
Our suite had a long entrance hallway with the bathroom leading off and a dog leg to another hallway that eventually led to the large double bed.
I liked the fact that the room was spacious with a large desk underneath a window with mountain views and then there was another table – with mountain views – to the side with inbuilt chessboard and chess pieces supplied in a little bag. There was oodles of storage in a separate hallway area near the door.
We enjoyed a couple of cocktails in the lounge in front of the pretty fire one evening, where we reflected what a shame it was our visit was so short. We heartily recommend this winter wonderland of a hotel.
