Our review

This historic hotel dates from 1866 and is arranged in classic style around a central atrium with a natural daylight roof light and open corridors, rising to four floors. The top floor is devoted to suites. Of particular note is the original mosaic floor and staircase. The salon has views over the river. The gourmet restaurant is attractively decorated in a typical Bavarian style. There are two larger restaurants for more casual dining and then the famous Sacher café with newspapers on reading poles, classical music playing and much Sacher torte being ingested. The comfortable bar allows smoking and has a terrace, as do all the restaurants.

We had a junior suite (room 306) with balcony overlooking the River Salzach. The room has a log effect fire with ‘smoke’ and a well equipped bathroom.

The room is light with floor length French doors and two waist-high windows either side. Above the fireplace is a television. There is ample storage with extra wardrobe space in the passageway. A two-seater sofa and two armchairs are arranged around a coffee table and the fireplace. To the side near the window is a round table at eating height with two dining chairs.

The room was recently refurbished and decorated in cream and fudge with soft cranberry as the main colour block. Jouy de toile fabric forms a theme in cranberry and cream and features on the door panels, chair backs and behind the bedhead.

The bathroom has a large, quick fill bath, double sinks, gorgeous toiletries made for the hotel with a chocolate ingredient, toilet stall with door, a single fresh flower head in a tiny vase, and a TV in the mirror. There are also cotton hand towels as well as traditional ones.

We recommend this lovely hotel that is right next to the river and in the town centre.
