Our review
If any hotel was worth a detour, it’s this one. Just north of Durban, it enjoys uninterrupted views over the sea and sandy beach that is often almost deserted, apart from the lighthouse and a ribbon of rocks that cause the waves to land with a crash.
I’ve known about this hotel for years – my parents took me when I was a child – so I was keen to see if it was as wonderful as I remember and not just childish nostalgia.
Although it’s been around since the 1950s, Red Carnation bought the property in 2007 and closed it for a two-year renovation. It re-opened in 2010. Anyone who knows the Red Carnation brand will appreciate that a great deal of care goes into each and every one, with even small details overseen by the owner.
The lobby area has original black and white floor tiles, the attractive original twisting staircase to one side with ironwork and wooden bannister, an antique mirrored wall with Turkish rugs on the floor and smart chesterfield sofas; and dotted around gorgeous large works of art and individual period antiques.
Moving on to the magnificent palm court, there are chandeliers here from the Savoy, London when it closed for renovation in 2010 and a huge buffet table heaving with the most delightful food; breakfast in the morning or afternoon tea later. There is a more formal restaurant for gourmet dining but we chose the Ocean Terrace, well known for its Indian buffet. Durban has the largest ex pat Indian population in the world, according to the PR, accounting for one of Durban’s most popular dishes – bunny chow – a hollowed out loaf filled with curry. Sitting in a booth, in the colonial style restaurant, I tried the curry buffet and Paul had his usual fish and chips. Except they weren’t very usual – his fish was the best he has ever tasted. “Caught this morning,” advised the waiter.
We had a Luxury sea facing room with balcony. All guest rooms have a balcony or terrace. Our room was directly over the sea and sandy beach, offering an uninterrupted view of the ocean, the tankers on the horizon, the lighthouse (now defunct but looked after by the hotel), the rocks, a few fishermen and a couple of joggers. We really enjoyed the sound of the sea at night and sitting on the balcony for a nightcap; it really is worth choosing this superior room.
As well as a comfortable bed with padded headboard, our pretty room was decked out in soft primrose tones with complementary artwork. There was an armchair and a table with chairs, so plenty of room to enjoy the space. Ample plugs were everywhere. We had fresh fruit, complimentary water, tea and coffee making and free fast Wi-Fi. The bathroom had a heated towel rail (often overlooked in warm places) and two types of robe; a light one and a towelling one with the signature red carnation logo. B Africa is the preferred toiletry supplier. They are lovely products, eco-friendly and made from plants. With quiet air-conditioning, our room lacked nothing.
Breakfast was incredible. As well as oysters and Champagne, there was poached haddock in cream, mince and onion and shish kebabs. An egg station, numerous bread options and an orchard of fruit reminds one that it is indeed breakfast one is eating and not some sort of never-ending feast. This sumptuous spread is included in all room rates.
The hotel has a cinema for guests, with several screenings a day and is particularly suitable for children, with a children’s club open all day during the summer season.
There are two pools, a spa and evening entertainment in all the restaurants.
We had a fabulous time here and have no hesitation in recommending this as a great all round hotel, as good as any we have stayed in.
