Our review

I’ll put my cards on the table straight away and admit I love The Dorchester.  My father brought me for a cocktail here when I was 18 and I thought I had ‘arrived’.  It was many years later before I stepped through the doors again.  My partner wanted to both please and impress me, so he booked us in here.  We had a magical weekend.  It was over the Christmas period, when The Dorchester is particularly lovely, with a beautiful real tree in all the guest rooms.  That year it snowed, almost on cue, as our breakfast was being delivered to our room and Hyde Park opposite became a winter wonderland.  If you want tea and coffee on tap, they will bring a kettle and all the necessities to your room, just ask.  Later as my husband, my delightful companion has brought me back several times since and I’ve attended functions here and dropped by the bar, so I feel I know it fairly well.

The guest rooms are wonderful, with their own hallway and doorbell, so you never hear any noise from anywhere (one of my top ten bugbears).  The Promenade, is great for people watching and serves very nice cream teas but if you like some privacy, it’s not the ideal choice.  The bar is eye-wateringly expensive but serves excellent cocktails and gets an evening off to a good start.  Before they changed it (a hundred years ago now probably) The Grill Room was lovely.  Old-fashioned two person sofas in crushed raspberry velvet were perfect for intimate dinners or girly lunches.  I don’t care for the Scottish theme – with life-size murals of Scotsmen in traditional dress, finding it all a bit overbearing.  But hey ho, the hotel is right in the centre of town, so only a cab ride away (or a short walk) from your favourite eating-house. (Ed: In 2014, the Grill Room was refurbished, with oak flooring, Murano glass chandelier and light leather seating. More refinements were carried out in 2023.)

The spa is possibly the nicest I’ve visited in London.  I’ve been here several times for facials and they are first class.  The décor and ambience is lovely too.  The rose-scented cordial is worth a visit alone.  There is no pool, but otherwise the spa is perfect. (You can also access it from your room without going through reception)

The hotel florist will arrange for a bouquet if you want to go over the top and the sweet little gift shop sells Dorchester Rose tea cups and saucers to remind you of your visit.

The nicest thing about The Dorchester is that you get the same treatment whether you are Lady Muck or a lowly muckraker.
