Stoke Poges, England
With a renowned golf course and tennis courts, Stoke Park – the set for several famous films – offers fine dining, a crèche and family activities, spa and beautiful gardens

Our review
Set in 300 acres, it’s hard to believe this bucolic country club, hotel and spa is only seven miles from Heathrow Airport. The hotel was famously featured in the Bond film, “Goldfinger” and more recently, “Layer Cake”.
It has a championship golf course, an eleven-treatment room spa, 13 tennis courts, indoor pool, a well-regarded restaurant, plenty for the children to amuse themselves and acres of grounds to enjoy.
Traditional guest rooms are in the main house with more modern options in the Pavilion. There are 49 rooms altogether of which 20 are suites. All rooms will be air-conditioned by early 2015. Some of the traditional rooms have four poster beds, antiques of the period and views over the landscaped grounds, masterminded by Capability Brown.
A family home until 1808, the hotel was the first country club in England, now with 4,000 members, perhaps explaining the friendly feel. Although it has five stars, it is luxurious without being pretentious.
The fine dining restaurant – Humphry’s – comes highly recommended. I’ve enjoyed several good meals here. During fine weather, sit on the large terrace overlooking the fairways and enjoy an aperitif first.
Provision for children is impressive with crèche, play ground, tennis and bikes. There are also plenty of walks in the grounds. Little ones get their own sized dressing gowns, cookies and special menus.
As well as outdoor tennis courts, there are three indoor ones and one can measure one’s performance using computer technology.
For traditional English fine living without a fuss, Stoke Park makes an excellent choice.
