Ascot, England
Elegant country estate near Ascot offering Michelin‑starred dining, a serene spa and luxe rooms set within expansive parkland

Our review
Set in 240 acres of grounds, it’s a long drive up to the house, passing lovely wildflower meadows, so pretty they made me inwardly gasp. And I needed to stop the car to take a snap.
The house feels less like a hotel and more like a country home. The low office desks in reception, rather than high, hotel like check-in desks and a simple, stripped wooden floor amplify this. With beautiful Georgian feature windows, not much decoration is needed. The lounge area has its fair share of antiques, but they are not overpowering, and the Murano glass chandelier hangs quietly over proceedings, rather than dominating them.
The main house holds 30 rooms. The rooms are classically furnished, some with four-poster beds; most have gorgeous copper baths and Mitchell and Peach toiletries. Espresso machines, fresh milk in a jug and free Wi-Fi come as standard.
The Stables are some distance from the main house and form a type of village, with its own green space and even a red working phone box. There are 39 modern cottages altogether, some of them duplex with sleeping areas upstairs. In the hall are Hunter wellies and umbrellas; refusing to allow the British weather to spoil anything. Some rooms have wood burning fires, making them particularly cosy in the autumn and spring, when it gets a bit cool. These cottages are ideal for families, with two little girls doing very impressive cartwheels across the grass on the day we visited.
The Coworth Park equivalent of the presidential suite is the Dower House, a self contained Grade ll listed three-bedroomed cottage with its own garden and stream.
The well-regarded spa has 8 treatment rooms and products by ishga, Natura Bissé, Made for Life Organics, Wildsmith, and the celebrity-loved HydraFacial. Conde Nast Traveller voted it the best UK spa in 2014.
There is a large indoor pool with a suntrap grassy bank immediately outside for sunbathing in relative privacy. There is a day lit gym with the latest equipment. Upstairs is the very pleasant Spatisserie, with views over the meadows.
Coworth is all about the outdoors. As well as the wonderful five-acre wild flower meadow to wander around, there are walking trails through the estate, bikes to borrow and jogging trails. Tennis is also available on clay courts. In front of the house is a well-kept croquet lawn.
The hotel is the only one in the UK with its own polo fields. The Guards Polo Club uses the grounds from May to September. Guests may attend the polo academy for half-day sessions with the captain of the English polo team. There are twelve horses onsite for hacking, or there is pony and horse riding from age four upwards. You may also bring your horse on holiday here; full livery is available. Because dogs may scare some horses, they are not allowed.
Dining is splendid, both formal and informal choices are available. Afternoon tea is a speciality and a pianist is on duty from 7.30pm every night in the main salon to accompany cocktails.
If you want to arrive in style, there is a helipad. However you choose to get here; it’s a relaxing respite from nearby London town.
