Paris, France
Elegant palace hotel overlooking the Eiffel Tower, blending Parisian heritage, Michelin-star dining and a serene spa with indoor pool

Our review
The hotel is situated very near the Eiffel Tower and opposite The Aquarium in the diplomats’ residential area of Paris, in the 16th arrondissement. It is said to have the best views of the Tower in Paris.
From a small driveway, one enters into the former home of a relative of Napoleon’s – his great nephew and built in 1896. These homes were meant to impress and the marble floors, tall columns, oversized vases of scented flowers and sweeping staircases still manage to make one inwardly gasp today. The hotel underwent a four-year renovation and opened in December 2010 as the Shangri-La.
There are just 101 rooms over the seven floors, with 36 suites. Half the rooms have views of the Eiffel Tower. Do check exactly what you will be able to see if this is important to you.
Opened in 2014 is the dining terrace at the front of the hotel, bathed in sunshine the day we visited and proving very popular with locals and resident guests alike.
The cosy Egyptian-themed bar makes a welcome retreat in the cooler months, with its wide striped wallpaper and animal print cushions.
The one-star Shang Palace offers fine Chinese cuisine. I liked the La Bauhinia, the name given to the salon with cupola, central chandelier and mezzanine balcony, offering drinks, all day dining and afternoon tea.
There is a 15-metre indoor pool, open until 9pm, a 24-hour gym and two spa treatment rooms using Carita products.
Only two minutes from the metro, this is a fine choice for a luxury hotel stay. If the weather is good, do try to get a room with a terrace and a view of the Tower.
Rooms
Shangri-La Paris features approximately 100 rooms and suites, housed in a former royal residence. Accommodations combine French Empire style with Asian design influences and include marble bathrooms with heated floors, rainfall showers and separate bathtubs. Many rooms and suites offer balconies or terraces, with renowned views of the Eiffel Tower.
Food and Drink
The hotel’s dining includes Shang Palace, a Michelin-starred restaurant specialising in refined Chinese gastronomy under the direction of Chef Tony Xu. La Bauhinia offers French and international cuisine in a light-filled setting beneath a glass dome, while the Bar Botaniste serves cocktails inspired by Asian botanicals and French spirits.

Wellness facilities are centred around Chi, The Spa at Shangri-La, set in the property’s former stables. The spa offers holistic treatments using organic Alaena products, alongside an indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room and a fully equipped fitness centre.
