Our review

The best feature of this hotel is its position right in the centre of town next to the station. Close by are scores of restaurants and bars, the Tourist Office and a large supermarket.

Although it’s a historic building, the hotel has been completely modernised, perhaps losing some of its character.

Our room was slightly disappointing in that the bed was just a couple of strides from the main door and felt a bit cramped, but other larger rooms we saw are so much better and many have good views. Features we liked were a wooden floor, Nespresso machine and international plugs. Despite the chandelier that softened the look a bit, the room had a corporate feel.

Jack’s Brasserie is attached to the hotel on the ground floor and is a buzzy place with a great atmosphere and comfortable seating. We had breakfast here. We were served our cold buffet on a tiered rack, rather like the ones you get for afternoon tea, which I found delightful. Food was very fresh and perfectly nice.

The bar gets busy from early evening and has an award-winning mixologist pulling in the crowds. In the summer, there is an alternative venue – the Sky Terrace – with far reaching views on the hotel roof.

The hotel also has an indoor pool – rare for a city centre hotel – with a five-treatment-room spa.

For convenience and good food, this is a sensible choice for a visit to Bern. Just make sure you choose a large room.
