Gstaad, Switzerland
Legendary alpine palace overlooking Gstaad, renowned for panoramic mountain views, refined dining and an iconic wellness retreat

Our review
This traditional Swiss hotel is family-owned and run by the third generation. Gstaad is by reputation conservative; some may feel the lounge areas feel a bit formal and the gourmet restaurants ‘stuffy’ with a strict evening dress code. However many guests like this and there are more casual choices if that is your wish.
The guestrooms, however, hold no such reservations. Wide corridors, high ceilings and sumptuous fabric-covered walls lead into renovated entry-level rooms of a decent size (2014). We saw a few rooms that have not been refurbished yet but they were still pleasant enough.
We had a superb junior suite – 318 – with wonderful mountain view, particularly enjoyable from the balcony. Refurbished in 2014, the room was decorated in shades of soft peach, apricot and rust. The large bathroom – plenty big enough for two people – in fashionable pale limestone, had a deep tub. The separate steam and shower room had a little seat incorporated. Ample Molton Brown toiletries were supplied along with nice little extras like a loofah, toothbrush and floss and bath salts. It was the sort of bathroom you want to wallow in.
Our room also had a large sofa and walk-in wardrobe. Windows that open were another bonus. The air-conditioning was so whisper quiet you couldn’t tell it was on. Our bed was supremely comfortable and had those marshmallow pillows that you just sink into and then fall asleep immediately.
Facilities for children here are very good with a supervised playroom from 3pm to 9pm in season and an exciting looking adventure playground outside.
The eight-treatment-room spa here is highly regarded with a fabulous relaxation area and burning central fire. Four leading beauty brands are represented, including Ivo Pentanguy. There is a large indoor pool and outdoor Jacuzzi, as well as an Olympic size outdoor pool. A hammam and sauna are also available. For the sporty, there are tennis courts and squash.
Breakfast was pleasant enough but the waiter chose to sit the few guests near each other rather than where it would be better for them, which I found slightly irritating. Buffet options were more limited than I have seen elsewhere. Since I am not a huge breakfast person, this was not a particular issue for me. What I had – tea and fresh fruit were perfectly fine.
The concierge desk was especially helpful and organised the hotel shuttle to take us down to the town centre in the evening and collect us again.
With fabulous rooms and a raft of facilities on site, this is a very good choice if you want a traditional base in Gstaad.
