Our review

We had a deluxe king room on the sixth floor with views to the side over the roof of the shopping mall.  Our room had a passageway with wardrobes, a sofa with coffee table and a king-size bed.  To one side of the bed was the bathroom with sliding door.  The bedroom décor was in muted earth shades of brown, beige and grey, with a subtle rose motif in the carpet and curtains.  The bathroom had a heated floor and was fitted in black marble with white crazing.  There was a pure white deep bath and separate rainwater shower, his and hers sinks and a separate toilet area.  Toiletries feature the luxury Texan Ohne brand (it means ‘without’ – parabens, sulphates, dyes – and is 100% biodegradable) with pump dispensers in the shower.  I liked having hair conditioner as well as shampoo and shower gel.  There was a magnifying mirror for make-up or shaving.  Other nice touches were the pop up chargers on the bedside tables and windows that open.  I also appreciated free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.  The room was immaculate, the bed comfortable and we had no noise from anywhere, despite being in a city location.

Elsewhere, some original features of the hotel have been retained – such as the old lift dials and clock.  Strangely, this works well with the Canadian modern art – for all to enjoy – that is displayed throughout the hotel, the largest collection in private hands.

As well as a pleasant bar on a mezzanine level off the reception area, the hotel also has a lively ‘outdoor lounge’ Reflections, with water channels and partially open roof creating the illusion of being somewhere other than a city centre hotel.  It was extremely busy when we visited and obviously a popular meeting place for cocktails and casual dining.

Off the lobby is the small but pleasant café for light snacks with a few chairs on the street.  We had a couple of exceptionally nice coffees here.

The Hawksworth restaurant is the go-to place for fine dining, headed up by the eponymous Vancouver Chef of the Year 2005, who has won many other accolades since. We took my friend, who is a local, and enjoyed a fine meal here.  Somehow Canadians seem to carry off gourmet dining without being pretentious, if this place is anything to go by. (And my experience in Montreal a few years ago.)

The spa is on the fourth floor and offers a wide range of treatments including special ones for children.  There is also a saltwater pool here.  I would have loved to have sampled both of these if I had had the time.

The hotel is right next to a large mall and opposite the Vancouver Art Gallery, so two places could be explored on the doorstop.  It is also two minutes from the Skytrain stop, with direct airport access.

If you want a comfortable place that is downtown and has a decent bar and good restaurant, the Rosewood Hotel Georgia would suit perfectly.
