Barcelona, Spain
For a truly unique stay, with spa, gardens, Michelin star fine dining, a pool and hot tub, plus a collection of contemporary arts, Hotel Arts is an unforgettable luxury location to explore Barcelona

Our review
The Arts Hotel was built in Barcelona for the 1992 Olympics. As befits a hotel in a city known for its design and art culture, it’s decidedly modern, with a huge wire sculpture by Frank Gehry forming a backdrop to the garden upstairs. At the entrance, a wall of water cascades past terracotta potted succulents and large stone ‘marbles’. The hotel has a minimalist look with pieces of unusual furniture strategically placed alongside understated floral creations – the floral work being among the best I’ve seen.
The hotel has 483 rooms altogether including 56 suites and was fully booked on the day we visited. I’ve been to the hotel before, but I still found the walk-round interesting as I always notice things I missed before. The hotel has a club lounge available exclusively to guests in club rooms. This pleasant lounge has views over the beach, plenty of space for relaxing or more formal tables for dining and food and beverage is available all day. It would be well worth considering this option, especially when Barcelona itself is busy and you need some quieter space. It’s also nice to pop in for a quick drink or snack without having to order, wait for it to be brought to you, then wait for the bill and pay or sign; here it’s all complimentary and you serve yourself.
The hotel has a spa on the top floor using Natura Bisse quality Spanish products and looks impressive.
The hotel has a large swimming pool in the garden with sunbeds and ice cream cart and small pool bar. There is also special chill out area with sunbeds reserved for apartment guests, a nice touch.
There are several places to eat at the hotel. The Arola serves tapas like food and is attractively furnished in shades of beige, turquoise and white, reflecting the Mediterranean. The Marina restaurant is next to the beach – all blonde wood and bright red geraniums – and serves casual food, specializing in fish. Enoteca is the fine dining option with two Michelin stars. It is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a twenty course tasting menu. It looked very glam with bare wooden floor, white cloths on the tables and white and grey stripes for the chair fabrics.
The common areas of the hotel were similarly stylish with silver, mink and grey being the preferred colour scheme.
Popular with Americans, the UK visitor still comprises a fifth of all guests. I’m not surprised. If you like modern and stylish, next to the beach, this hotel will suit you perfectly.
