Our Review

The hotel is a purpose-built luxury hotel, away from the lakes, but carefully tucked into the unspoiled Aravalli Hills.

Your arrival here is dramatic: at the gatehouse, you transfer from your taxi into their hotel car, with escort, driving ahead, that takes you up the steep cobbled climb to the palace. Once you arrive and step out, there is a guard of honour and pink rose petals thrown over you.

The palace is brand new (2005), but it’s been cleverly designed to look like it’s been there forever. The lobby made me gasp – shimmering marble pillars and floor, a magnificent crystal chandelier, full length windows overlooking the pool and the city beyond, the Tikiri glasswork reflecting the light. Local artwork adorns the walls, the physical impressions softened with a quirky outsize birdcage, a hanging seat, typical of the region, and welcoming comfy looking seating arrangements of sofas and chairs begging you to sit.

The spa and salon is run by friendly Charu Lal, who mixes the oils for the pouches herself, so is literally very hands-on. Each treatment is preceded by a small gong ceremony, which I thought was rather nice.

There are two pools, one temperature-controlled but they are not private, being centrally placed and are used at night for dining around.

Down the hill is a comprehensive outdoor entertainment area with mini golf, pickleball and even stables with horses, for those keen to ride.

We had a fabulous suite with private pool, cabana and sunbeds overlooking the Aravalli Hills, but all rooms are of a decent size, and have outdoor space, even if it’s a balcony. They also have a separate toilet and bathtub, rather than just a shower. One of the advantages of a new build is that the designers can give guests exactly what they want.

I loved the Dahaad bar with its life-size brass leopard that guards the bar. They have an interesting range of curated cocktails and a huge list of wines by the glass.

The breakfast buffet was vast, with the gimmicky squeeze your own orange juice, by riding on a pushbike, and self-serve ice cream from a rotating counter. I like the Asian options – bao buns, noodles, and dim sum. There’s something for everyone and it all runs like clockwork, despite being busy. They have a traditional South Indian restaurant where their signature meal is the 50-dish thali. In days past, thalis were made for sharing, not a single tray with options for one.

The Daastaan tearoom offers a chef’s table, where female chefs will delight you with their Asian food, explaining the dishes while cooking in front of you. It’s accompanied by special teas, which as you can imagine, went down very well with me.

They can cater for weddings here and regularly do. There was a wedding in progress while we were there. But it is kept separate at another part of the hotel, and we were not bothered at all. Maybe the loud fireworks at 9pm were a bit of a shock, but they didn’t last long.

If you like a larger place with lots on offer, this could well be your choice.
