Udaipur, India
A small, independent boutique hotel, set on a hilltop, a short distance away from the bustle of the city, but only a 15-minute drive away.

Our review
Now in its tenth season (2026), hands on owner Richard is a marvellous host, and along with his business partner, Trish, built the hotel from scratch. It manages to look old, mainly because the doors, windows and other artefacts are original rescued architectural heritage pieces from a town that suffered an earthquake. There is a strong sense of style, from Richard’s previous association as a designer for Ham Yard hotel in London.
You need deep pockets to quell your desires at the large onsite shop, bursting with an assortment of fabrics and garments, the latter designed by Richard and stitched in the nearby village.
Set over two floors, all the guest rooms are different and huge, furnished with antiques and become places in which you’d like to linger.
Set around a central courtyard is the pool, surrounded by gardens and birdsong.
I loved the complimentary tea and homemade cake and biscuits at 4pm and the large, comfy residents’ lounge, filled with tasteful antiques and books left by previous guests. At 6pm, you are welcome to don a pinny and join the chefs in the kitchen. Dinner is freshly prepared every day; normally six veggie dishes, a chicken dish and a mound of fluffy rice. Sitting around a table, lit by many candles and decorated with flowers, it’s a serve yourself convivial affair. Prior to this, it’s cocktails at 7pm, where Richard holds forth and guests can get to know each other.
This hotel would be perfect for someone travelling on their own, who enjoys a bit of company but doesn’t want to be railroaded into enforced conversation. Tricia and Richard are very good at ‘reading the room’ and will leave you alone if that is your wish.
Many of the guests are repeats, using it as a springboard to other places or the final swansong before going home.
I loved it here and the staff are treated like family.
