Our review
As the name suggests, this hotel is right on the water’s edge. Opened in time for the Winter Olympics, this modern hotel is relatively new, having been operating since 2010. It’s in a convenient position in the downtown area.
The hotel is a triumph of modern architecture and technology, taking full advantage of its location by making the most of the harbour views, with floor to ceiling glass, stainless steel and natural wood. Bright and minimalist, with sleek lines, the impression is one of chic luxury.
Aiming to be paperless, the hotel has a mobile check-in facility and in each room is an iPad that you use to operate room controls, book a spa treatment, read a menu or book a table in one of their restaurants.
In common with many of these tower block hotels, the lower levels are the hotel and the upper levels are private apartments, in this case the first 22 floors.
The stylish entrance features shiny white and grey marble, a modern living flame raised fireplace, potted mother-in-laws tongues standing to attention in pebble- filled troughs and an eye-catching white Fazioli grand piano. Our guide told us that one night a couple of years ago, a tribute band was murdering a Pink Floyd song. Unbeknown to them, Roger Waters was sitting in the lobby lounge. Evidently, he got up and took over and a few lucky guests had a free mini Pink Floyd concert. It’s a nice story if it’s true…
Most rooms have far-reaching harbour views, so it would be a shame to forfeit this. It is also worth considering upgrading to the Fairmont Gold service that gets you access to the private lounge with complimentary food and drink, butler service and use of the hotel’s chauffeured fleet of BMWs for travel in the downtown area. You also get free Wi-Fi.
As one would expect, the rooms are modern and classy. Each has a Nespresso machine, a ‘live’ bright tree picture and a suit valet stand – appealing touches. Bathrooms are marble deliciousness in grey and white. A separate shower, deep bathtub and technie bits like the TV in the mirror will delight geeks and TV addicts. Obviously, rooms get even better as one upgrades, with private patios and nicer views.
The Botanist restaurant is run with an organic ethos and sports an open kitchen serving unpretentious but reliable food. As well as catering well for little ones with their own mealtimes and menus, the kitchen will also provide really good food for your four-legged family member.
If you like modern and appreciate good views, this hotel in downtown Vancouver should be seriously considered.
