Sölden, Austria
Nestled in the Ötztal Valley, surrounded by mountains and 145km of ski pistes, Das Central hotel offers luxury rooms and service, fine dining and spa

Our review
Standing at 1370 metres above sea level and in the southwest of the country, Solden is one of Austria’s most well known ski resorts. It has a wide variety of entertainment, bars, shops and restaurants, from the slightly seedy to the sophisticated.
Das Central is located in a quiet street just off the main drag. With Innsbruck airport just an hour away and a long ski season, it makes a good choice for a ski holiday. There is also hiking and a range of sports activities in the area.
The hotel was originally set up by the man who brought skiing to the area – Herr Falkner – who set up the cable car systems. His daughter now runs the hotel.
We had a junior suite with balcony, a rich red carpet contrasting with the pine furniture. Our bathroom was simply furnished but ticked all the boxes. The hotel has its own brand of toiletries. I liked the little towelling stool and the hairdryer worked well. There was ample wardrobe space and the bed was comfortable.
We especially liked the family suites with glass sided bathroom.
The hotel has a good team here; there is a great atmosphere among the staff. Several key members have been with the hotel for over 20 years. The restaurant is divided into smaller rooms, or stube, as is common in this part of the Tirol. The wine cellar has 30,000 bottles, their Austrian selection being one of the largest in the country.
The spa is especially impressive with 16 treatment rooms and a pool complete with gondola.
A kids room open all day makes this a good choice for families with young children.
Overall, this is a lovely hotel and ideal for those who want the best of both worlds – to be near the nightlife, restaurants and shops but in a relatively quiet position away from the crowds.
