Our review

The summer heat intensified the scent of honeysuckle and roses lining the path on the way to the reception area.  This large room, with signature bright lemon walls, polished wooden floors, large rugs, table lamps, bowls of fruit and smart fireside chairs with contrasting sofas, felt like a private home rather than a hotel.

Our room (12) had every little thing thought about carefully.  Rather than just a complimentary bottle of water, there were two bottles of wine, a coffee machine with coffee sachets, fresh brownies, popcorn, crisps and other snacks, a local cheese plate and several pieces of fruit. (These are replenished if you stay for more than three days.)  In a vase were some simple freshly picked roses from the garden, much nicer than an expensive bought-in flower arrangement.  The realistic gas effect log fire could be turned on at the flick of a switch and the fireplace was raised off the ground, so it could be enjoyed from the large king size bed, swaddled with a goose down quilt and Italian linen.  The small wooden balcony, with views over the Santa Lucia Mountains is accessed through wooden French doors and has a small table with chairs to watch the sun going down or see it rising, according to your wish.  To one side of the bed is a large sofa and coffee table and in the other corner, near the window is a dining table with two chairs.  The high ceilings made this room feel even bigger.

The large marble bathroom has a bath for two, a separate shower with easy-to-use controls, his and hers sinks, a magnifying mirror with a light (total joy) and some wonderful organic toiletries, in large refillable pumps.  The icing on the cake was a loofah and bath salts.

There is a pretty antique armoire instead of the standard wardrobe.  With bedside lights good enough to read by and free Wi-Fi, I was really struggling to find something wrong.

In the bar, we chatted with the delightful mixologist, Anna whose sleight of hand produced an excellent Americano cocktail for Paul.  We had a tour of the kitchen and saw the chef’s table, a horseshoe shaped booth situated right next to the action.  On the wall behind the booth, several celebrities, including Clint Eastwood have signed their name.  As one would expect from a wine lodge, the cellar is comprehensive.  The focus is on reds and they have 25,000 bottles, some dating back to the 1850s.  Their destination restaurant ‘Lucia’ is Michelin-recognized.

Outside, a low hedge surrounds a well-kept croquet lawn and to one side is the terrace, dotted with teak tables and chairs and scented with established honeysuckle bushes.  It was here several hummingbirds attracted by the nectar fascinated me.

Towards the rear of the property is the large spa that is open every day.  As well as its own pool and relaxation room, there is a eucalyptus steam room.  A large variety of treatments are available, including hairdressing.

Final world:  With one of the most carefully thought out bedrooms I have seen, this is a place I would recommend without hesitation.
