Our review

The Westin is an American-owned hotel situated in a smart neighbourhood of Valencia in the city centre.

Built in 2007 to support the America’s Cup, it has 135 rooms, 11 of which are suites.

The small hotel is based around an internal courtyard garden, with paths lined with small privet hedges and filled with palm trees and numerous other shrubs. All the restaurants lead onto this terrace so you may enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner and your evening drink outside at a different location if you wish.

Rooms are large by Spanish standards. Westin claims to be the first hotel group to design their own bed for guests’ comfort and we certainly slept soundly on our king-size one, the default for all rooms. The 250-thread Egyptian cotton linen and pillow menu also aided our repose.

We had a grand de-luxe room with private balcony and Jacuzzi. Sadly, we had no time to try it out, but half an hour’s notice is needed to fill it, should you be luckier.

The room had a large desk and plenty of space for our numerous suitcases, together with two tub chairs and a table. I felt the room was a bit dated: cream and brown wide-striped wallpaper, a suede-like cream coloured headboard and then the same material in chocolate behind the wall of the bed. Lamps were orange, the carpet was a swirl of brown and cream and then the centre light was a throwback to the 1930s possibly, but didn’t seem to go with anything else. The tub chairs were dark brown. There was a lovely piece of modern art on the wall but it was a bit lost in the bland confusion. The room felt dull and uninteresting and very masculine, which is a shame as everything else worked. Needless to say, Paul noticed none of this and thought the room was “fine”.

As mentioned already, the bed was fantastic and there were also directional lights for reading.

The bathroom had a deep tub and walk in shower with grab rails. All rooms have separate bath and shower. The sink was black marble and there was not a lot of room for toiletry bags, but overall I’d say it was well designed. A decent hairdryer, with switch – not one where you have to keep it pressed – is supplied, plugged in, ready to go. Toiletries – their own brand – were very good.

The hotel has a garden room used for breakfast with outdoor terrace. Breakfast here is very good with everything one could want from the buffet, hot and cold. Tea or coffee is brought to the table and everything else is help yourself. There was an egg station too. This room offers all day dining. There is also a Mediterranean restaurant and the SeaBar bar.

The hotel spa has an indoor heated saltwater pool with the spa. There is also a Turkish bath, steam room and sauna. A fitness room is open 24 hours. The hotel is able to loan gym clothes and shoes under their arrangement with New Balance. For a small fee to cover cleaning (5 euros) you get clothes and trainers and keep the socks. This is a fantastic idea and proving popular. It saves packing your own clothes and bulky trainers and also takes care of those occasions when you have unexpected free time to use the gym but have not brought your kit.

The hotel is only a ten to fifteen minute walk over the bridge to the old town. It’s peacefully situated and makes a good choice for a visit to Valencia.
