Our review

Only 40 miles from the French border, the property was completely dilapidated when the owners took over the former 18th century farm 35 years ago.

There is the main historic building and then several outbuildings that comprise the garden suites and the Naranja suites with their own pool.

There are numerous public rooms with polished quarry tiles and flagstones and filled with antique furniture and effects. There are both sun filled and shaded terraces leading off with bougainvillea, jasmine and potted red geraniums.

Situated in 13 acres in unspoiled countryside, there are walks from the property and two bikes to borrow. Close by are three other restaurants and not far away are several pretty towns to explore. You are advised to have a car and parking is free.

We had a garden suite with its own private terrace with dining chairs, table and sunbeds. The terrace actually got the sun too, so it was nice to spend a couple of hours here.

Our room was very comfortable. As well as Wi-Fi, there is a complimentary mini bar with soft drinks and beer. The bed was enormous and with a special topper on the mattress, extremely comfortable. The sheets were very soft (I have a skin allergy so notice itchy sheets) and there was a choice of pillows. There was a sofa and easy chair and coffee table. There was a separate room for the toilet and bidet. The bathroom had its own gorgeous toiletries and white lilies in a vase, a lovely touch. There were ample fluffy towels supplied. The shower being over the bath was a minor niggle for the bathroom but since it worked so easily – a simple off/on – I forgave it immediately. A small step down to the main room might prove a bit of a nuisance for some guests. I just put a wastepaper basket there to remind me.

The spa is a recent addition and has four treatment rooms. As well as a heated pool, with small terrace and three sunbeds, there is a gym with views over cornfields.

The outdoor lap pool has plenty of room for sunbeds in the pretty garden surrounding it.

We had our best meal in Spain at their gourmet restaurant, better than some Michelin-starred places I have eaten in. With vaulted ceiling and tiled floor, it’s open for lunch and dinner. Linen-clothed table are well spaced so you can’t overhear the person sitting next to you and chairs are comfortable. They have resisted the temptation to cram too many people in. Service was impeccable; professional but not snooty. The sommelier was very helpful even though we ordered no wine from the 400 labels available. (Afterwards on the terrace, he came rushing out to stop Paul from drinking a sherry that he had realized was corked.)   A waitress was making steak tartare in the dining room and mixing it individually to order to suit the guest’s exact taste preference. The place was packed – mainly with Spaniards – who obviously are lucky to have this as their go-to local.

The next morning, the superlatives continued with an excellent breakfast in the garden room overlooking the pool.

This is one of the best hotels I have stayed in for a long time and comes highly recommended.
