Geneva, Switzerland
Luxury riverside hotel in central Geneva with refined dining, contemporary interiors and views across the Rhône River

Our review
The Mandarin Oriental is centrally situated next to the bridge with lovely views from many of the guest rooms overlooking The Rhone and the Jet d’Eau.
The lobby area is a little small and doesn’t feel particularly grand, but is pleasant enough.
We had a modern premier river view room on the sixth floor, refurbished in 2013 by Isabelle de Margerie, a Parisian interior specialist. The room had a hallway with bathroom to one side and a separate cloakroom with shower to the other side.
The large bed was positioned to one side of the room with a desk behind it, and facing the floor length windows. On the other side was a sofa with easy chair and a suspended lamp. Behind the sofa was another desk. This meant two people could work in the room at once, which I think is a good idea, and nearly always overlooked. All guest rooms have a printer; another great addition.
I was not well on this day and the hotel very kindly allowed me to have the room early – around 11am – and go straight to bed. I was very grateful as I felt quite poorly and more or less slept through until the next morning. The bed was supremely comfortable and the room very peaceful. The air-conditioning worked well and was whisper quiet.
The light switches were very hard to fathom. I always find this irritating. Paul did not manage any better, even though he has a degree in computer science.
In the bathroom, the hairdryer cord was not long enough. The strip lighting made it difficult to see properly in the mirror, so applying make up was tricky. The shower had a floor length door opening out, so a bathmat could not be placed in a convenient position. I liked the Molton Brown toiletries. In the suites they tend to have Gilchrist and Soames.
There was ample wardrobe space and in fact, the room itself was spacious and didn’t feel cramped, despite our four suitcases. Floor to ceiling windows meant it was filled with natural light during the day.
We saw other guest rooms and I actually preferred the ones that Isabelle designed in 2009. These are more classical and have softer tones. The suites all have large bathrooms and walk in wardrobes.
The main restaurant open all day is where Paul had his breakfast. He said I had missed a treat; he enjoyed an excellent yoghurt and coffee and said the buffet spread was very good.
Staff were very helpful and kind; something you don’t always get with larger hotels. For a trip to Geneva for business or pleasure, this hotel is worth serious consideration.
