Vevey, Switzerland
The 19th century Hotel des Trois Couronnes is located in the heart of Vevey, renowned for its chocolate and vineyards, and offers views over Lake Geneva, fine dining and spa

Our review
The hotel is basically a long rectangle with the entrance to the side, so there is no sweeping driveway approach. However, once up a few steps and inside, it’s impressive. A helpful receptionist sent someone for our luggage while I took in the attractive interior: twelve pairs of striking marble columns, a fountain, and a grand piano. Towering above us were five storeys around the aforementioned central area below. The hotel was purpose built in 1842 and oozes history.
We had a suite – room number 323. There were two rooms but both were quite small, with just room for one dining room style chair in the bedroom. Décor was understated and modern, a little bare to my taste. The lounge has a sofa with coffee table. A nice feature was a terrace with wonderful lake views. I liked the walk-in wardrobe too with automatic light. Coffee and tea making facilities are in every room. The bathroom had twin sinks but not much room either side for wash bags. Molton Brown toiletries were appreciated but in the smallest size, which always looks a bit mean to me. The hairdryer was very good; it was light, easy to operate and had a long cord.
Some of other guest rooms – especially the other suite we saw with steps up to the bedroom – were more exciting and nicer I think. Some of the rooms had original features and antiques, whilst still feeling modern and fresh. All the rooms are different so it is important to contact hotel to make sure you get the one that is right for you.
The hotel has a very nice looking nine-treatment-room spa, with exclusive products by Frenchwoman Joelle Ciocco, the only hotel in Switzerland to offer them. There is also a fabulous 25m indoor swimming pool with underwater music and Jacuzzi.
The elegant gourmet restaurant, open for both lunch and dinner, has a Michelin star and views across the lake. It was here we had an excellent breakfast. Staff are friendly, and all the buffet products were of high quality. Paul enjoyed smoked salmon with all the trimmings and my white egg omelette with herbs was faultless.
Over our short stay, this hotel grew on us. It’s right in the centre of town too. So a thumbs up from us.
