Our review
The hotel is sited in a vineyard in a restored 16th century convent. Owned by a wine producer and exporter, the company is one of the largest producers of wine in Spain. Uninhabited for fifteen years, work began on the site in 1999 and the building opened as hotel in 2003. At the entrance is a striking modern sculpture by Spanish artist Carmen Castillo.
There are 17 villas, each with its with own outside area; and the main building housing 23 rooms, three of which are suites.
We were in a villa with king-size bed, large sofa and wardrobe and nice homely touches such as good quality linen and woollen throws on the beds. There was both air conditioning and heating. We had views to the vineyards. The room was very quiet as it’s some distance from a road. There were two minibars; one with complimentary soft drinks and and one crammed with bottles of wine, also complimentary. The vineyard produces young but very drinkable red wine. Our villa had a small private flower-filled terrace with room to sit out.
There is a nice rustic restaurant with friendly staff and good food – some of the best I’ve had in Spain. We also enjoyed an excellent breakfast with delicious bread and fresh croissant rolls with hazelnut chocolate filling.
There is a wonderful chapel dating to the 1540s. In the cellar are over 1800 barrels of wine, each holding 225 litres of wine in French and American oak caskets. A fascinating cheese tour is available on Saturday and Sunday to their organic farm that is 15kms away. They have free wine tastings Thursday to Sunday of this estate wine, white wine from another vineyard and a reserve (superior) wine.
Much is made of the fact that Christopher Columbus stayed here and one of the rather nice suites is named after him. This is a two-floor suite with good views with a stunning larger than life-size painting of Columbus by a Spanish artist as a feature in the main living room.
There is a small spa in the grounds near the canal. You need to book treatments in advance and someone attends from offsite.
The pretty grounds have outdoor dip pools (unheated) in the gardens and numerous terraces. There are three canals on the estate and a disused mill that form an attractive view from the dining room.
If you want to relax and unwind and are a bit of a wine lover, this is the place for you. Staff members are friendly and helpful. We recommend coming by car. There is free parking and interesting towns to discover in the locality. Do note the hotel is closed for most of January.
