Our review

This historic hotel was opened in 1812 and has just over 100 rooms. Its situation in the heart of the city, on its main shopping street, makes it an excellent choice for leisure guests.

A particular feature of the hotel is the Capella Lounge – reserved for resident guests only. This is a large, comfortably furnished room with sofas and coffee table arrangements, staff on hand to act as concierge and self serve tea and coffee – and sometimes a few snacks – available all day. There is also a selection of books and newspapers. I really liked this room. Sometimes hotel lounges can be overrun with businessmen holding informal meetings.

I also liked the fact that the spa and indoor pool are for guests only.

We were in deluxe room 603. It was classically designed with dark wood furniture and beige drapes. It had a comfortable bed with soft headboard. Another plus for me were the tea and coffee making facilities and a free soft drinks minibar. The automatic controls for the curtains and lights worked well. The room also had a large desk with two power sockets. There was a chaise longue and stool and ample storage space. Wndows could open and the aircon was both quiet and efficient. The bathroom had separate bath, shower and toilet stall, double sinks, with space for washbags, heated towel rail and L’Occitaine toiletries in a decent size. It was almost perfect except I would have liked a magnifying mirror.

We ate our meal in the brasserie at a table overlooking the street. Service was swift and friendly. I enjoyed a very good borsch and salad and then opted for the cheese board. I think five cheeses is too many and I do wish European countries would consider serving biscuits instead of bread. One of my cheeses was overripe.

We had a very pleasant buffet breakfast here the next morning. The cheese board had been refreshed and looked excellent. There was a wide selection of other cold options.

The hotel also has a flexible check-in/check-out system. I know of so few other hotels that do this.

In essence, this hotel has geared itself to guests’ needs and gets a definite thumbs up from me.
